An Insightful Perspective from ACEN’s CEO, Eric Francia
ACEN President and CEO Eric Francia recently highlighted a pivotal shift in renewable energy auctions—advocating for a separate competitive bidding process exclusively for battery energy storage systems (BESS), instead of bundling them into the Philippine Department of Energy’s existing Green Energy Auction Program (GEAP).
At Altilium Green Energy, where we are actively building out our Smart BESS™ capacity in the Philippines, we fully support this dedicated approach. The growing integration of renewable energy, which can often be intermittent, makes robust battery storage essential for maintaining grid reliability and ensuring a consistent power supply.
One of the major challenges currently facing our energy landscape is grid curtailment. Curtailment occurs when excess power—typically generated by solar or other variable renewable sources during periods of high production—is left unused, resulting in “spilt power” and wasted potential. By integrating a targeted BESS solution, converting this otherwise lost energy into saleable power could increase project revenues by more than 50%.
This proposal from ACEN represents a forward-thinking approach aimed at reducing energy waste while maximizing efficiency. Beyond GEAP-4, it focuses on capturing every unit of renewable power and converting it into cost-effective, reliable electricity. By optimizing the use of available energy, this measure not only lowers operational costs but also helps deliver more affordable power to communities throughout the country.
Battery energy storage systems are no longer optional—they’re essential. As we scale up renewable energy, BESS plays a critical role in capturing excess generation, reducing waste, and delivering steady, on-demand power. Investing in storage isn't just about grid support—it's about making clean energy more accessible, reliable, and affordable for all.
At Altilium Green Energy, we are proud to be at the forefront of this energy transition. Our flagship Smart BESS™, designed in collaboration with experts from the UK and US and assembled locally in the Philippines, leverages advanced AI to optimize battery performance—extracting up to 95% capacity per cycle, offering a lifespan of 15,000 charging cycles, and maintaining a 99.9% uptime guarantee. We are dedicated to fueling a cleaner, more resilient energy future for communities across Asia Pacific.
